The issues that the Melbourne trio—made up of Jenny McKechnie, Shauna Boyle and Nick Brown—tackle span the massive environmental decay, apocalyptic dread , the systematic privilege, misogyny and the personal emotional abuse. This four-track, seven-inch release, simply titled EP , is seven-and-a-half minutes of thrashing, take-no-shit punk. This is punk rock splattered in pastel polka dots and adorned with floppy antennas. Like their colorful, cartoonish album cover, the album celebrates the vast characters of working-class London: the dubious, fun-loving rascals, the crass authority figures, the squares and the reckless brutes. Somehow, it evokes a carefree thrill and a display of skill, both at the same time. At this point in their career, at least, Dogleg go faster than both those bands.

However, unlike most people, I never seemed to grow out of this phase. Though pop-punk music hit its peak in the mids and early s with bands such as Green Day, Good Charlotte and Blink, the genre has only improved with time. Now, bands such as Movements, Knuckle Puck, The Story So Far, Hot Mulligan and Neck Deep dominate the scene, combining traditional pop-punk characteristics — brooding lyrics and simple chord progressions, for example — with new elements they have picked up from other genres. For instance, raw screams emulate more hardcore punk bands, and intricate guitar riffs and solos mirror genres such as math rock and progressive rock. Another Sept. I love the harmonies between the vocalists and the positive message to take deep breaths and move on in the face of hardship, which is a reminder I often need to hear.
